New Lanark is a small 18th- century village set in a sublime Scottish landscape where the philanthropist and Utopian idealist Robert Owen moulded a model industrial community in the early 19th century. The imposing cotton mill buildings, the spacious and well-designed workers' housing, and the dignified educational institute and school still testify to Owen's humanism.

Scottish Higlands and Islands

Your trip begins in Glasgow, Scotland’s largest city. Lowland sights include Gretna Green and Carlisle, including Carlisle Castle, which has guarded England’s frontier with Scotland since the 11th century. It is here that Mary, Queen of Scots, was imprisoned in 1558. Next, travel to Scotland’s capital, Edinburgh, and visit fascinating Edinburgh Castle. In the Scottish Highlands, enjoy visits to pretty Braemar, home to the Royal Highland Games for over 900 years, a whisky distillery, and the Highland capital of Inverness. Visit Culloden Moor and Cawdor Castle, setting for Shakespeare’s Macbeth, on a half-day excursion. Then tour the unique Orkney Islands in the company of a Local Guide. The stunning scenery of northern Scotland leads you to the isles of Skye and Mull for two-night stays on each. Back in Glasgow, there is time for a city sightseeing tour and last-minute shopping before completing this exceptional vacation experience in Scotland.

Carlisle Castle is situated in Cumbria, England and is over 900 years old. Due to its close proximity to the border between England and Scotland, it has been at the heart of many wars and invasions.

Carlisle Castle was first built by William II of England, the son of William the Conqueror who invaded England in 1066. At that time, Cumberland (the original name for Cumbria) was still considered a part of Scotland. When William II arrived he drove the Scots out of Cumberland and claimed the region for England. Soon after in 1093, William went about building a Norman style motte and bailey castle in the town of Carlisle on the site of an old Roman fort. Carlisle Castle was built to fulfill the need to keep the northern border of England secure against the threat of invasion from Scotland. In 1122, Henry I of England gave orders for the old Norman castle to be replaced by a stone castle and a stone keep and walls erected.

Travel Scotland and you will witness the magnificance of the Carlisle Castle. Scotland trips and Scotland tours are the best way to experience everything Scotland has to offer! Don't wait, get your cheap Scotland vacation package today!

If you are interested in staying in Edinburgh for your first night travelers will fly into Glasgow airport, pick up their car rental and drive approximately 45 minutes to Edinburgh. Both cities offer travelers an incredible first night at two of Scotland's liveliest cities. Recommended visits along your journey are Loch Ness (Inverness), town of St. Andrews, Edinburgh Castle and many more areas waiting to be discovered.

The Loch Ness is a large, deep, freshwater loch in the Scottish Highlands extending for approximately 37 km southwest of Inverness. Its surface is 15.8 metres above sea level. Loch Ness is best known for the alleged sightings of the legendary Loch Ness Monster, also known as "Nessie".

It is connected at the southern end by the River Oich and a section of the Caledonian Canal to Loch Oich. At the northern end there is the Bona Narrows which opens out into Loch Dochfour, which feeds the River Ness and a further section of canal to Inverness. It is one of a series of interconnected, murky bodies of water in Scotland; its water visibility is exceptionally low due to a high peat content in the surrounding soil.

Loch Ness is the second largest Scottish loch by surface area at 56.4 km2 after Loch Lomond, but due to its great depth it is the largest by volume. Its deepest point is 230 m deeper than the height of London's BT Tower and deeper than any other loch with the exception of Loch Morar. It contains more fresh water than all lakes in England and Wales combined and is the largest body of water on the Great Glen Fault, which runs from Inverness in the north to Fort William in the south.

Taking a tour of Scotland you will find great antiquities and mysteries in the land! Chepar Scotland vacations are within your reach with Sceptre Tours, and if you travel Scotland you will not soon forget it!

Britain Bed & Breakfast

Bed, Breakfast, and the perfect cup of tea. No one does B&B better than the British – warm welcome, cozy bed, hearty English or Scottish breakfast to send you on your way. Our Open Voucher System makes it easy to move from town to countryside at your own pace, and with a flexible B&B package you can ride the London Eye, roam the Yorkshire moors, and cover Scotland from Loch Lomond to the Firth and Forth. Step into history at the Traitors Gate in London, see where literary genius William Shakespeare was born at Stratford-upon-Avon, experience the quintessential Scottish Castle, Eilean Donan near the Isle of Skye. From the streets of swinging London to the cobbled lanes of the Cotswolds to the heather-edged footpaths of the Scottish highlands, your dream of Britain is a long and winding road – with a nice cup of tea at the end.

As one of the most iconic images of Scotland, Eilean Donan is recognised all around the world. Situated on an island at the point where three great sea lochs meet, and surrounded by some majestic scenery, it is little wonder that the castle is now one of the most visited and important attractions in the Scottish highlands.

Although first inhabited around the 6th century, the first fortified castle was built in the mid 13th century and stood guard over the lands of Kintail. Since then, at least four different versions of the castle have been built and re-built as the feudal history of Scotland unfolded through the centuries.

Partially destroyed in a Jacobite uprising in 1719, Eilean Donan lay in ruins for the best part of 200 years until Lieutenant Colonel John MacRae-Gilstrap bought the island in 1911 and proceeded to restore the castle to its former glory. After 20 years of toil and labour the castle was re-opened in 1932.

The Tuscan region in Italy is known for its artistic masterpieces, beautiful scenery with unique landscapes and medieval hilltop towns. Tuscany is in the west central region of Italy with Florence as the capital. There are ten provinces including Arezzo, Florence, Grosseto, Livorno, Lucca, Massa-Carrara, Pisa, Pistoia, Prato and Siena. This region boasts some of the best Italian wines, including Chianti.

The Chianti region exists between the northern city of Florence and the southern city of Siena. Many of the vineyards that reside alongside the curvy roads stretch for miles. One of the main roads, referred to as Chianti Road, travels through multiple small villages in the Tuscan countryside. Along the way, the landscape opens up to ancient castles, olive groves, cypress tress, and country farmhouses. Most of the vineyards in this region, as well as all over Italy, are family-owned and have been family run for decades or longer.

The Sangiovese is the primary grape in Chianti. The Sangiovese is considered a medium bodied grape and is usually aged five to eight years to produce Chianti. Chianti Classico requires a minimum of 80% of the Sangiovese grape and the rest of the wine consists of various blends. Most of the vineyards allow visitors to take a look at the grape vines and possible taste the grapes.

Intro to Ireland

Dublin and the scenic best of the Irish Republic await you on this beautiful journey, a top vacation seller. Your trip begins in Dublin, the capital of Ireland. In Dublin, enjoy a visit to Oscar Wilde’s Trinity College as part of an orientation drive around this vibrant city. A scenic ride through horse-racing country leads you to the National Stud and then to Limerick. Next, savor the breathtaking views of the Cliffs of Moher and the Clare Coast, and enjoy Irish hospitality at Rathbaun Farm. After taking a ferry across the Shannon, a panoramic drive takes you around the stunning Ring of Kerry. The world-famous Waterford Crystal Factory, Ireland’s oldest handweaving mill at Avoca, Glendalough, and the scenic Wicklow Mountains conclude your Irish vacation. This trip is ideal for first-time visitors to Ireland with only a little time to spare. An unforgettable Ireland vacation!

Saturday nights, it is nearly impossible to get a cab: the town is bustling with the late-night drinking crowd. There are trendy bars such as Howl at the Moon (7 Lower Mount St), proximate to the posh D4 region, so named after its Dublin 4 postal code. For good times in a less imposing atmosphere, it is best to opt for Doyle's by Trinity College to mix with the student crowd or any other bar that is close to Temple Bar.

A visit to Dublin is not complete without stopping by the notorious after-hours bar Copper Face Jack's, located at 29 Harcourt Street and casually referred to as Copper's. It seems all of Dublin is gathered there after the regular bars have closed. Late-night party-goers must take warning, however: it is best to enter Coppers only as part of a large group in order to successfully push through the crowd towards the bar and for protection from the kissing bandits!

Upon arriving in Dublin, tourists usually head for the Temple Bar area, which, although overcrowded with other tourists, is worth a visit if only for its special atmosphere. A place where street performers, colorful vagabonds, and backpackers of all nations come together, Temple Bar always feels like a festive place, especially on the weekends. It is a pedestrian-only district in the heart of Dublin comprised of dozens of nightclubs, restaurants, and pubs, most of which are unfortunately not worth entering. Many of the bars that try to provide a typically Irish flavor are merely tourist traps charging ridiculous prices for mediocre food.

Essential Britain & Ireland

This comprehensive vacation gives you an insight into all five countries of the British Isles. Start your trip in England with visits to prehistoric Stonehenge, Salisbury with its famous cathedral, and the extraordinary excavations of the Roman Baths in Bath. Then travel to Cardiff, the capital of Wales, and through South Wales to board the ferry for the crossing to Ireland. Watch the craftsmen at work at the Waterford Crystal factory, admire the stallions at the Irish National Stud, and relax in Dublin, Ireland’s capital, before heading north past the Mountains of Mourne to vibrant Belfast. Another ferry crossing takes you to Scotland and its capital city, Edinburgh, where a guided city tour includes a visit to Edinburgh Castle. The final highlights of this vacation include the Duke and Duchess of Roxburghe’s magnificent Floors Castle, a walking tour through York, and last but not least, Shakespeare’s birthplace in Stratford-upon-Avon. You’ll arrive home with lots of stories and photos to share from your vacation to the British Isles.

Built in three phases around 3100 BC, the enormous stones at stonehenge placed in a circular formation in an abandoned field have intrigued visitors for generations. Some believe the place to be a former location of human sacrifice, others believe it was a holy place of Sun worship.

Possibly the most important monument built in Britain in prehistoric times, the formation at Stonehenge was built in three stages, according to archeologists. The stones seen today are the completed third stage.

The rock formations cast very different moods depending on when visited. The best times to photograph the formations are early morning when the sun is rising and in the early sunset. Light bathes these rocks in softer tones creating images as impressive as the site itself.

Few mysteries exist in our modern world. England’s Stonehenge in Salisbury remains one of those unsolved mysteries that continue to boggle the minds of archeologist and tourists alike. Make this a must see when visiting the UK.

Scottish Highlands & Islands

The Scotch Whisky Tourism Initiative, otherwise known as ScotlandWhisky has published a map which shows the six best whisky bars in Glasgow, for those who want to sample some of Scotland's most famous drink while visiting the city. Glasgow has always played a vital role in the story of Scottish whisky, and not just as a prime market for the product. Today it is home to the headquarters of three of the leading Scotch whisky companies, and there are two single malt distilleries that are easy to visit from the city: Auchentoshan.and Glengoyne.

Each of the bars on the Glasgow whisky trail not only has a great selection of whiskies, including single malts, blends and rare bottles, they also have a staff who have been specially trained to really know their whisky. Drinking in these top whisky pubs will be an education as well as a pleasure.

Best of Italy and Sicily

This traditional grand vacation of 16 days is perfect for those who wish to see all of Italy, including Sicily. In the cities of Rome, Florence and Venice, highlight visits are included to St. Peter’s, the Sistine Chapel, the Colosseum, Michelangelo’s David, St. Mark’s Basilica, and the Doges’ Palace with the Bridge of Sighs. Admire the Leaning Tower of Pisa and St. Francis’ Basilica in Assisi. After visiting Pompeii, board the overnight ferry to Sicily for four nights where visits to Palermo’s Palatine Chapel and the Norman Cathedral in Monreale, the spectacular Valley of Temples and the 4th-century Roman Villa of Casale await you. A ferry brings you across the Strait of Messina to Calabria. Two nights in Sorrento include a visit to the Isle of Capri with a visit to Villa San Michele in Anacapri. On the way back to Rome, stop at the medieval Abbey of Montecassino.

At first sight the historic Vucciria Market in the capital Palermo has all the flavour of an Arab souk, except that here the glitter of beaten brass is replaced by the glistening skins of all kinds of fish: curly-tentacled squid, huge swordfish with milky blue eyes and small fish called Auccioli with tails perkily curled - held up by a piece of string tied to their heads. Stalls are stacked with brilliant peppers, olives and long thin zucchini, round yellow cheeses, bread, rabbits and a zillion other things that you probably would not recognize.

Much of Palermo is quite grand, with wide avenues lined with palm trees, stylish shops and restaurants and hotels like the Grand Hotel della Palma which has an attractive air of faded elegance. In fact, the city itself has a whiff of past glory as many of its wonderful old buildings are in need of a face lift.

Palaces and churches have been restored and the historic Teatro Massimo, closed for nearly a quarter of a century, reopened in 1998 with Pavarotti singing in Aida.

There’s no singing in the Catacombe di Cappuccini, rather the wail of death. This underground necropolis is packed to the ceiling with thousands of mummified bodies. Their empty eyes stare out from dark niches, from coffins and from shelves. Many are propped up with bits of string. Some with mouths open cry out in dismay; others peaceful, hands crossed, accepting, conversing with each other, or hanging heads in shame.“What did we do to deserve this?” It’s not for the faint hearted.

Italy's Great Cities

This 9-day trip will show you the highlight cities of Italy, covering all the notable features from St. Peter’s, the Sistine Chapel, the Colosseum and the Forum in Rome to Michelangelo’s David in Florence and St. Mark’s Basilica and Doges’ Palace with the Bridge of Sighs in Venice. Local Guides in these cities will answer all your questions. Also included are a special welcome dinner in a lively Roman restaurant, and stops in Pisa to admire the Leaning Tower, and in Verona to see Juliet’s balcony. Scenic rides will show you the Tyrrhenian coast, the Lombardian plains, the flat Po area, the wooded Etruscan Apennine mountain range, and Tuscany’s Chianti wine country. In Venice a private boat ride and a glassblowers’ demonstration are included

The Leaning Tower is a bell tower (or campanile), found in the UNESCO World Heritage-listed Campo dei Miracoli (Field of Miracles). It is right next to Pisa’s Duomo (or cathedral), which is arguably a more spectacular sight. Construction of the tower was built way back in 1173, although it took centuries to be completed.

There is a combination of reasons for the Leaning Tower’s famous lean. The main one is the soil it is built on – it’s really crumbly and not ideally suited to having large structures plonked on top of it. A local joke is that it is called the Field of Miracles because it’s a miracle that anything’s still standing on it. It didn’t help matters when the builders, seeing the lean, decided to build the campanile higher than originally planned in a hare-brained attempt to correct it. During the 1990s, expensive repairs were undertaken, including the removal of plenty of soil underneath the tower to straighten things up a little. The Tower has now been declared safe for the time being.

It’s sad, it’s pathetic, but the main reason that people visit the Leaning Tower of Pisa is to get a picture of themselves holding it up or pushing it down. The first piece of advice for those wanting to get the traditional tacky shot is to get there early before the hordes arrive. The light will be more conducive to photography, and there is more chance of getting a shot without other wannabe Tower-pushers getting in the way. The best spot is between the Duomo and the huge line of souvenir stalls opposite – it’s possible to precariously balance on the pillars there, making it look like the subject of the photo is holding the top of the tower, not the bottom.

Italy at Leisure

This is the perfect 11-day LeisureStyle vacation to see Italy’s highlights in the most comfortable way. Three nights in Rome with a special welcome dinner and with sightseeing including St. Peter’s, the Sistine Chapel, the Colosseum, and the Forum. The centrally located hotel gives you the opportunity to also explore this fabulous city on your own. On the way to Florence visit the Piazza del Campo in Siena and picturesque San Gimignano. The three nights in Florence, again with a centrally located hotel, do not only feature sightseeing including a visit to the Academy of Fine Arts to admire Michelangelo’s David, but also allow visits to the Leaning Tower of Pisa and splendid Verrazzano Castle where you will taste the Chianti wines and enjoy lunch. Two nights in Venice, again in the center, include not only visits to St. Mark’s and Doges’ Palace with the Bridge of Sighs, but also an unforgettable Venetian Lagoon Cruise to the islands of Murano and Burano. Stop in Verona, to take pictures of Juliet’s Balcony, before ending in Milan with a visit to the magnificent Gothic Duomo.

The third largest Christian church in the world and the artistic apex of the Flamboyant Gothic, Milan's Duomo was begun by the first Duke of Milan in 1402, but the spot was a holy place long before. In a Paleochristian Baptistry on that site, St Ambrose baptised St Augustine in 387.

In the first of the elaborately decorated side altars, the bishop’s sarcopagus is an outstanding example of 11th-century stone carving. The cathedral’s oldest windows -- 15th- and 16th-century stained glass – are in the first chapels on this side.

In the transept (the crossing, where two major side altars face each other), the tomb of Gian Giacamo de'Medici is by the 16th-century sculptor Leone Leoni. Continue following the outer wall, past the almost too realistic sculpture of St Bartholomew, into the semi-circular ambulatory (the aisle that curves around behind the altar)

An elevator and a stairway lead to the rooftop, one of Milan's highlights. You can inspect the delicate spires and statues eye-to-eye, get a dizzying perspective of the streets below and on a clear day see the Alps, which look startlingly close.

The Duomo is open daily from 7am to 6:45 pm.

Central European Experience / Paris to Prague

Cruise along the Moselle, Rhine and Main Rivers, as well as the Main-Danube Canal. Enjoy city sightseeing in Paris, Prague, Bernkastel and Bamberg.

Take a Danube River Cruise and get to know the celebrated river immortalized by Strauss in his famous Blue Danube waltz. The Danube River surges through most of Central Europe, flowing into the Black Sea and it is Europe's second longest river. The Danube originates in Germany's Black Forest region and flows through eight countries. See the very best of Europe on cruises that highlights centuries of art, history and culture. Learn the legends of this unique corner of the world, and see for yourself why the romantic Danube is such a treasured river.

Explore both sides of Hungary’s capital—traditional “Buda” and more cosmopolitan “Pest”—and from Fishermen’s Bastion, see how the river divides this fascinating city. Experience Vienna’s imperial architecture and gracious culture, and tour riverside towns in Austria’s Wachau Valley. And in Germany, explore a baroque cathedral and stroll cobbled streets lined with half-timbered houses. Savor the tastes of authentic dishes, learn about local legends, and understand why Strauss immortalized the “Blue Danube” in his famous melody.

Black Sea Discovery / Bucharest to Budapest

Visit remarkable Belgrade and Bucharest. Stop in Kalocsa, sail past the Petrovaradin Fortress, and pass through the dramatic Iron Gates Gorge. Enjoy full-day excursions to Veliko Târnovo, Arbanassi and Varna.

A topographer will tell you that The Black Sea formed many millions of years ago in an elliptical depression between Bulgaria, Georgia, Romania, Russia, Turkey, and Ukraine.

An historian would say that in the 5th Century, the Greeks referred to it as the 'Inhospitable Sea' because notoriously belligerent tribes lived along its coast. But later, after subduing the locals (particularly the ferocious Scythians, who used the skulls of unwanted visitors as wine goblets), they dropped the 'in' and called it the Hospitable Sea instead.

And a marine scientist would propose that its modern name derives from unusual micro-organisms which inhabit its waters and ink them with black sediment.

Contemporary travellers probably only need to hear the answer to the question -- is the Black Sea worth exploring by cruise ship? And the answer to that is that it most certainly is -- and you should go there soon before the modern plague of commercialism starts to erode its unique characteristics.

The Black Sea is one of cruising's best-kept secrets, a perfect antidote if you've had enough of the increasingly overcrowded and overtrodden Mediterranean. It offers every bit as much history and culture, alongside fabulous blond beaches and increasingly sophisticated cities, as better known Mediterranean counterparts. You can look forward to a wide variety of experiences on a Black Sea cruise -- one day soaking up the sun on the honey-sanded beaches of Varna in Bulgaria, the next exploring the cobbled medieval streets of nearby Nessebur.

You could find yourself discovering the magnificent parks and fine architecture of Odessa, the region's most sophisticated city. Or drinking in the history of Sevastopol -- where the Light Brigade made its legendary Crimean War charge. There's Yalta, where Stalin, Roosevelt and Churchill gathered to redraw the map of Europe at the end of World War II.

Black Sea Discovery / Budapest to Bucharest

Visit remarkable Belgrade and Bucharest. Stop in Kalocsa, sail past the Petrovaradin Fortress, and pass through the dramatic Iron Gates Gorge. Enjoy full-day excursions to Veliko Târnovo, Arbanassi and Varna.

The Black Sea is an inland sea in Eastern Europe, surrounded by Russia, Ukraine, Turkey, Bulgaria and Romania. It is connected to the Mediterranean by the Bosphorus Strait. A Black Sea cruise will take you to lands known best for their history, variety of terrains, unique cultures and long-standing traditions. Port calls in the Ukraine, Turkey, Bulgaria and Romania are featured and sailings are typically 7 to 14 nights in length. Enjoy the sunny Crimean Coast, the colorful day-to-day activities of Istanbul, or the therapeutic resorts of Odessa. Itineraries often include visits to Greece and Italy as well.

Finding the perfect Black Sea cruise is easy at Sceptre Tours. Whether you are planning an extravagant cruise or just a last minute getaway, a short sailing or an extended voyage, you can find it all at Sceptre Tours. Book your dream cruise with Sceptre Tours then let the fun, relaxation and pampering begin. Search for your ideal cruise by destination. Burgundy & Provence / Cote d'Azur to Paris

See France at its scenic best on this charming getaway. Guided sightseeing acquaints you with vibrant Paris and with Nice, the “Queen of the Riviera,” while a deluxe 7-night cruise along the Saône and Rhône Rivers takes you into the heart of this beautiful country. Enjoy orientation walks in Mâcon and Tournon; a Burgundy wine tasting in medieval Beaune; and see the sights with Local Guides in Avignon, Arles, and Lyon, France’s gastronomic capital. Opportunities abound on this grand vacation to learn about and to taste the sumptuous wines and local cuisine.

For individuals that enjoy traveling, the endless options for places to go for vacation can be daunting. If Europe is a destination option, a river cruise may be a great way to experience European culture. River cruises can be a comfortable and relaxing way to explore European cities and not have to worry about hotels and meals. River cruises also offer an alternative to large cruise ships that can not maneuver in the smaller river ports

River cruises typically operate from early spring through November. The decision to go on a river cruise may depend on the destination. The more northern places like Belgium and The Netherlands will be colder in the fall. For a Christmas holiday, some cruise lines will offer trips through Germany and Austria to visit the Christmas markets.

For warm weather, the best time for a river cruise is obviously in the summer. The landscape and colorful trees in the fall are impressive with moderate temperatures. Going through the Netherlands, companies offer tulip cruises that operate from March through mid-May, with April being the best month for tulip sightings
