Wine Tasting Package

Enjoy a vacation to one of the most suggestive areas of Tuscany, known all over the world for its wine and its countryside of unrivalled charm, where woods alternate with vineyards and olive groves, in a landscape dotted with Romanesque churches, farmhouses, villas and castles of rare beauty.

This tour includes 3 night accommodations in Castello di Leonina, one of the most romantic destinations in Tuscany. During your stay, you will partake in a special welcome dinner, sampling some of Tuscany’s finest foods. The next 3 nights will be spent at La Fattoria Deli Usignoli, a 4 star hotel that offers amenities to suit any traveler. Also included in this wonderful package are 2 wine tasting tours at a historic Tuscan villa and Agriturismo.

Chianti is a red Italian wine produced in Tuscany. It was historically associated with a squat bottle enclosed in a straw basket, called a fiasco however, the fiasco is only used by a few makers of the wine now; most Chianti is bottled in traditionally shaped wine bottles. Baron Bettino Ricasoli (later Prime Minister in the Kingdom of Italy) created the Chianti recipe of 70% Sangiovese, 15% Canaiolo and 15% Malvasia bianca in the middle of the 19th century.

The first definition of a wine-area called Chianti was made in 1716. It described the area near the villages of Gaiole, Castellina and Radda; the so-called Lega del Chianti and later Provincia del Chianti (Chianti province). In 1932 the Chianti area was completely re-drawn and divided in seven sub-areas: Classico, Colli Aretini, Colli Fiorentini, Colline Pisane, Colli Senesi, Montalbano and Rùfina.

Most of the villages that in 1932 were suddenly included in the new Chianti Classico area added in Chianti to their name-such as Greve in Chianti which amended its name in 1972. Wines labeled Chianti Classico come from the biggest sub-area of Chianti, that sub-area that includes the old Chianti area. The other variants, with the exception of Rufina from the north-east side of Florence and Montalbano in the south of Pistoia, originate in the respective named provinces: Siena for the Colli Senesi, Florence for the Colli Fiorentini, Arezzo for the Colli Aretini and Pisa for the Colline Pisane. In 1996 part of the Colli Fiorentini sub-area was renamed Montespertoli.

Italian Family & Friends

Experience one of Italy’s great boutique hotels with 6 nights at the lovely La Fattoria Degli Usignoli in Tuscany. With panoramic views of the Tuscan countryside, the hotel has lush gardens containing an outdoor pool and a separate children’s pool. Continue your Tuscany experience with a wine tasting tour at a historic Tuscan Villa. Theres nothing quite like a vacation with family or friends to deepen your relationship and create memories to be treasured for a lifetime. Tuscany is an idyllic base for friends and family to share a once in a lifetime vacation.

Wine-growing, grape vines and wine have been an integral part of Tuscan civilization for almost three millenniums, since the Etruscans first settled in the territory. The Etruscans imported the grapevine from the Orient and made the cultivation of the vine an important part of agriculture. The grapevines of Etruria were strong and wild, they grew like trees producing so many grapes that Etruscans could sell them from the beginning on markets beyond the sea. The Etruscans planted the grapevines along the sea - so the lands of Maremma and the coastal regions south of Livorno were the first cradle of Tuscan wine. The Greeks called this region of central Italy Enotris, the "land of wine".

Shrewd merchants of the Sienese territory, in the deepest Middle Ages, systematically began to plant vineyards in the inland regions. Wine, after bread, was the food most in demand. Apart from water, there existed no other drinks. And Christianity, through the New Testament had made wine a pilaster of its most sacred rituals. Bishops, abbots, monks, priests from the country and city, began to plant vineyards around the walls of the churches, convents and monasteries. The Benedictines that were proven agriculturists wrote precious manuals on the cultivation of the grape. Wine consumption was impressive. In the 14th century the Sienese drank 419 liters a head (compared to today's barely 60 liters a head per year).

Tuscan wines have become very interesting; they are gentle, have intense colors, are more vinous, have spicier perfumes, and flavors that are dense, sapid and evolved. All that is left to say that the Tuscan wine scene is still a world to discover. And there is no better way than to experience the wines where they are actually made, encountering the people that have dedicated their whole lives to this magnificent drink.

Italian Flavors & Fashion

Italy is known for its world-renowned cuisine and its first class fashion. What better way to experience the finest food and fashion than to spend 7 days in the wonderful cities of Milan and Bologna? Start with 3 nights at the beautiful Hotel Sanpi in Milan, which is located in the heart of the city center, and is only a short stroll from the Montenapoleone fashion district.

Take some time out from shopping to visit some of Milan’s historic sites such as The Duomo and the Museum of Ancient Art. After 3 wonderful nights in the impressive city of Milan, you will travel by train to the lively city of Bologna. During your time in this great city, make sure to try all of the great restaurants that Bologna is famous for. After indulging in great food and fun, you will spend your 3 nights in Bologna at the Hotel Regina.

Via Montenapoleone is an elegant and the most expensive street in Milan and Italy, famous for fashion and jewelry shops. It is the most important street of the Milan Fashion District (Italian Quadrilatero della moda) where many well-known fashion designers have their high-end boutiques and stores from Italian designers to all the world famous brands. Via Montenapoleone is also regarded as the most important 'street in fashion', as Milan is recognized as the absolute capital of fashion in the world.

Its name dates back to 1804, and the height of the Napoleonic era. In those days Milan was teeming with foreigners who crowded into the city, not only for business reasons, but more often than not because - as Stendhal, himself a lover of Milan, pointed out - the city was "a wealthy republic dedicated to art and pleasure".

The splendid extravagance of those times are in some ways reflected today in what is called the 'Quadrilatero', that is Via Sant'Andrea, Via Spiga, Via Borgospesso and - alas - Via Monte Napoleone itself. In these streets and their environs one can find the greatest concentration of famous fashion designers outlets, both Italian and foreign, as well as jewelers, furriers and antique dealers.

Waterford Castle Package

Waterford Castle, located 2 miles from Waterford City is uniquely situated on its' own private 310 acre island on the River Suir, surrounded by woodlands and an 18 hole championship golf course. Waterford Castle offers accommodation of a superb standard and is currently the only Deluxe Hotel in the South East of Ireland. The Castle's 19 bedrooms are bright and airy with stunning views of the surrounding estate; the guests live here rather than simply stay here.

Waterford Castle Hotel and Golf Club is uniquely situated on its own private 310 acre island. Access to the island is via a chain linked private car ferry, which is operated 24 hours a day. Located 2½ hours south of Dublin, in South East Ireland, the island is within a short drive from Waterford City Centre and the world-renowned Waterford Crystal factory is only a 15-minute drive.

When you arrive on the island, you will be greeted by the island's own private car ferry which operates 24 hours a day. Take a tree-lined driveway, where over a thousand years ago the first inhabitants cut out a rough track to secure their settlement. Ahead stands the 16th century castle, proud and immense, its corners folded back in cloud-grey coloured stones

The Island originates back to the 11th century and was once home to the FitzGerald Family. The island is now privately owned, comprising of a 19 bedroom luxury hotel and 18 hole Championship Golf Course, surrounded by woodlands and the River Suir.

Once inside the Great Entrance Hall, guests are greeted by original Oak panelled walls, Portland stonewalls, tapestries and a huge open log fire.

Waterford Castle reaches back into time, a time capsule that reflects history. According to tradition, a Monastic settlement existed on the island sometime between the sixth and eighth centuries and two "finds" on the land have lent substance to this: a Winged Angel dating from the 8th century and the crude carving of a Monk's head, which is now prominently displayed over the main entrance to the Castle, dating from the 6th century.

The first family to live on the Island was the FitzGerald amily, cousins to Strongbow. During the 15th and 16th centuries, the FitzGerald's were the Kings of Ireland in all but name and hosted many feasts and banquets on the Island.

Ireland City Sights & Country Delights

The cities of Ireland are ancient and beautiful - the perfect home base when you want to explore the surrounding sights. Stay in a modern, comfortable hotel in one of Ireland's best-loved cities: like the beautiful Sligo, or Limerick, serene and stately on the banks of the Shannon. From Limmerick you can visit Bunratty Castle ands the Cliffs of Moher, stopping at seaside villages along the way. From Sligo explore the scenery that inspired William Butler Yeats. Whilst in Dublin, the capital and one of Europe's most beautiful and popular cities, see the Book of Kells at Trinity College - and enjoy fine dining and cutting edge theatre at night.

Bunratty Castle is a large tower house in County Clare, Ireland. It lies in the center of Bunratty village (Irish: Bun Ráite), by the N18 road between Limerick and Ennis, near Shannon Town and its airport. The name Bunratty, Bun Raite (or possibly, Bun na Raite) in Irish, means the 'bottom' or end of the 'Ratty' river. This river, alongside the castle, flows into the nearby Shannon estuary. From the top of the castle, one can look over to the estuary and the airport. The castle and the adjoining folk park are run by Shannon Heritage.

Alongside the castle is an extensive folk park, particularly popular with families, tourists and schools. This features reconstructions of historical cottages and buildings, recreating the general feel of the 19th century with a period style village main street. Old tools, furniture and artifacts are displayed, with the village kept alive by some inhabited shops, an old home bakery and peat fires in cottages. Today it is a major tourist attraction along with the castle as it sees thousands of people pass through its gates every year.

The landscape is wild and romantic - and you're never too far from home base. You can enhance your trip with a visit to London and get the best of both worlds.

Inverness is a city in northern Scotland. The city is the administrative centre for the Highland council area, and is promoted as the capital of the Highlands of Scotland. The city lies near the site of the 18th century Battle of Culloden and at the northeastern extremity of the Great Glen, where the River Ness enters the Inverness/Moray Firth making it a natural hub for various transport links. It is the northernmost city in the United Kingdom. A settlement was established by the 6th century with the first royal charter being granted by King David I in the 12th century.

Medieval Inverness suffered regular raids from the Western Isles, particularly by the MacDonald Lords of the Isles in the fifteenth century. In 1187 one Donald Bane led islanders in a battle at Torvean against men from Inverness Castle led by the governor's son, Duncan Mackintosh. Both leaders were killed in the battle, Donald Bane is said to have been buried in a large cairn near the river, close to where the silver chain was found. Local tradition says that the citizens fought off the Clan MacDonald in 1340 at the Battle of Blairnacoi on Drumderfit Hill, north of Inverness across the Beauly Firth. On his way to the Battle of Harlaw in 1411, Donald of Islay harried the city, and sixteen years later James I held a parliament in the castle to which the northern chieftains were summoned, of whom three were executed for asserting an independent sovereignty.

Founded in 1413, St Andrews is the oldest university in Scotland. By the middle of the sixteenth century the University had three colleges - St Salvator's (1450), St Leonard's (1511), and St Mary's (1538): the buildings of St Mary's College and St Salvator's Chapel both date from this period.

The 16th to 18th centuries saw a period of mixed fortunes for the University. During this time St Salvator's and St Leonard's Colleges joined to form the United College which still survives in a greatly enlarged form.

In the 19th century the University made considerable progress in developing teaching and research in the Arts, Divinity and the Biological and Physical Sciences. In 1897 the University was joined by a new academic centre in Dundee and with it gained notable achievements in Medical and Applied Science. This association ended in 1967 with the foundation of a separate University of Dundee.

The University history, its personalities and its teaching practices can be traced through the collections of documents, art works, furniture, laboratory equipment and specimens that it has accumulated in its Museum collections.

Budapest to Amsterdam and Everything In-between

Cruise between Budapest and Amsterdam. See many of the cities along the way including: Cologne, Miltenberg, Nuremberg, Passau and Vienna. Sail through the dramatic Rhine Gorge, see Lorelei rock.

Passau is a town in Lower Bavaria, Germany, known also as the Dreiflüssestadt (City of Three Rivers), because the Danube is joined there by the Inn from the South, and the Ilz coming out of the Bavarian Forest to the North.

Its population is 50,415, of whom about 10,000 are students at the local University of Passau. The university, founded in the late 1970s, is the extension of the Institute for Catholic Studies (Katholisch-Theologische Fakultät) founded in 1622. It is renowned in Germany for its institutes of Economics, Law, Theology, Computer Sciences and Cultural Science.

Passau was an ancient Roman colony of ancient Noricum called Batavis, Latin for "for the Batavi." The Batavi were an ancient Germanic tribe often mentioned by classical authors, and they were regularly associated with the Suebian marauders, the Heruli.

During the second half of the 5th century, St. Severinus established a monastery here. In 739, an Irish monk called Boniface founded the diocese of Passau and this was the largest diocese of the Holy Roman Empire for many years.

In the Treaty of Passau (1552), Archduke Ferdinand I, representing Emperor Charles V, secured the agreement of the Protestant princes to submit the religious question to a diet. This led to the Peace of Augsburg in 1555.

During the Renaissance and early modern period, Passau was one of the most prolific centres of sword and bladed weapon manufacture in Germany (after Solingen). Passau smiths stamped their blades with the Passau wolf, usually a rather simplified rendering of the wolf on the city's coat-of-arms. Superstitious warriors believed that the Passau wolf conferred invulnerability on the blade's bearer, and thus Passau swords acquired a great premium. As a result, the whole practice of placing magical charms on swords to protect the wearers came to be known for a time as "Passau art." (See Eduard Wagner, Cut and Thrust Weapons, 1969). Other cities' smiths, including those of Solingen, recognized the marketing value of the Passau wolf and adopted it for themselves. By the 17th century, Solingen was producing more wolf-stamped blades than Passau was.

Paris to Normandy, by Cruise Ship!

This European River Cruise will Combine time in France’s splendid capital with discoveries of quaint villages along the Seine and in the picturesque Normandy region, and the poignant WWII landing beaches. Experience Vincent van Gogh’s Auvers-sur-Oise, Claude Monet’s stunning gardens at Giverny, and Joan of Arc’s historic Rouen. Taste the apple cider, Calvados, and camembert for which northern France is famous.

When Monet and his family settled in Giverny in 1883 the piece of land sloping gently down from the house to the road was planted with an orchard and enclosed by high stone walls.

A central alley bordered with pines separated it into two parts. Monet had the pines cut down, keeping only the two yews closest to the house to please Alice.

From this Clos Normand of about one hectare, Monet made a garden full of perspectives, symmetries and colours.

In 1893, ten years after his arrival at Giverny, Monet bought the piece of land neighbouring his property on the other side of the railway. It was crossed by a small brook, the Ru, which is a diversion of the Epte, a tributary of the Seine River. With the support of the prefecture, Monet had the first small pond dug ; even though his peasant neighbours were opposed. They were afraid that his strange plants would poison the water.

Later on the pond would be enlarged to its present day size. The water garden is full of asymmetries and curves. It is inspired by the Japanese gardens that Monet knew from the prints he collected avidly.

The sculptural decoration of the tower is extremely rich: 56 relief carvings in two registers, and 16 life-size statues in the niches, all by Florentine masters of the l4th and l5th century (among whom Andrea Pisano, Donatello, Luca Della Robbia).

Piazza San Marco is the principal square of Venice! The Piazza originated in the 9th century as a small area in front of the original St Mark's Basilica. It was enlarged to its present size and shape in 1177, when the Rio Batario, which had bounded it to the west, and a dock, which had isolated the Doge's Palace from the square, were filled in. The rearrangement was for the meeting of Pope Alexander III and the Emperor Frederick Barbarossa.

The Piazza has always been seen as the centre of Venice. It was the location of all the important offices of the Venetian state, and has been the seat of the archbishopric since the 19th century. It was also the focus for many of Venice's festivals. It is a greatly popular place in Italy even today.

Italian Winter Delight

Enjoy a leisurely exploration of southern Italy and all of its delights. Start with two nights in Rome, and visits with a Local Guide to the Vatican Museums and Sistine Chapel, St. Peter’s Square and Basilica, the Colosseum and the Roman Forum. Enjoy a guided walking tour of the excavations in Pompeii, the Roman city both destroyed and preserved by an eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 AD. Stay three nights in the bayside resort of Sorrento, and visit the Isle of Capri, the Amalfi Coast, and Positano. On the way back to Rome, visit the Abbey of Montecassino.

One great aspect of this vacation is the guided walk tour of the excavations of pompeii! Here is a short history of what there is to see! On August 20th, the earth began to rumble and crack, and the usually calm sea gave way to giant waves. Horses, cattle and birds became uneasy and restless, as if they could foresee the disaster that awaited the town. Finally, on the morning of August 24th, 79 A. D. the volcano burst open with an earsplitting crack. Smoke, mud, flames and burning stones spewed from the summit of the mountain, sending a rain of ash and rock through the surrounding countryside. The mud seeped down the sides of Vesuvius, swallowing nearby farms, orchards and villas. Adding to the destruction were the mephitic vapors that accompanied the falling debris; the fumes first caused deliriousness in their victims, then suffocated them.

Some people of Pompeii grabbed their beasts of burden and attempted to flee the area; others perhaps chose to wait until the streets were clear of the panicked masses; still others sealed themselves up in rooms, supposing that the ashes and poisonous gasses would not harm them there. The unfortunate people who could not escape in time to avoid disaster were killed by falling buildings, overcome by the mephitic gas, or simply buried by the rapidly falling ash. Their bodies were quickly covered by the volcano's mineral deposits, which covered Pompeii in a layer more than 30 feet thick.

With Sceptre Tours you get the best experience of guided tours in Italy and will witness the magnificance of places such as Pompeii! They offer the lowest rates on vacation packages to Italy as well as the best service! Choose Sceptre Tours for your next vacation to Italy!

The history and culture of Dublin makes this city a favorite destination in Ireland. Museums, pubs, restaurants and shops make Dublin an eclectic city with something for everyone. The Dublin Zoo is reknowned for it's rich history. Dublin Zoo was opened in 1831 by the then Royal Zoological Society of Ireland, which had been founded the previous year. The animals were supplied by its counterpart in the UK, London Zoo.

Like other Zoo's of this time, Dublin Zoo was nothing like it is today. Its purpose was to show as many different kinds of animals as possible to people who had never seen anything like it.

With the Dublin City Vacation package you will witness all the wonders of Dublin and get extensive viewing pleasure at the Dublin Zoo! While in Blarney you'll be fascinated by the Blarney Stone! The Blarney Stone is a block of bluestone built into the battlements of Blarney Castle, Blarney about 5 miles from Cork, Ireland. According to legend, kissing the stone endows the kisser with the gift of gab (great eloquence or skill at flattery). The stone was set into a tower of the castle in 1446. The castle is a popular tourist site in Ireland, attracting visitors from all over the world to kiss the Stone and tour the castle and its gardens.

The Ross Castle in Ireland!

Ross Castle is located about a 10 minute walk from the town centre, Ross castle is a magical place, and the magic is not just the castle its self, It is a fairytale backdrop set on the side of the lakes, where there's is a lovely little beach, It is not advisable to swim here, but Itake your shoes off and get your feet wet, the water is cold but very soothing, the views will take your breath away.

There are tours of the restored building every hour (but check before you go as, it is seasonal) if you decide to take the tour, check in well in advance, there are only so many places per tour and they fill up quickly, especially in the summer. In my opinion the best time to go is in the early evening, you will find very few people there at this time (after 6;00pm) the sun is starting it's decent and the light is perfect for photographs.

There is a little coffee shop with a picnic area, but it closes around 5;00pm, so bring your own and share a sandwich with the ducks, watch the boats sail slowly by as the local boatmen make their way home. Failing that go early in the morning before 9.00am. This place is amazing, so enjoy.

Sound like somewhere you would like to visit? Well make that dream a reality with Sceptre Tours, where you can find vacation packages to Ireland for the lowest prices! Choose Sceptre Tours for your next vacation to Ireland!

A brief history of the Legend's Saint Andrews Golf Course:

On May 14, 1754, twenty-two ‘Noblemen and Gentlemen’, listed below, contributed to a silver club to be played for annually over the Links of St Andrews. The first winner was Baillie William Landale, a St Andrews' merchant, who became Captain for the year. The competition was initially open to all golfers, as had been that of the Leith golfers in 1744, whose rules the St Andrews' golfers used almost without change. Thus began the foremost club in both Scottish golf history and world golf in general.

Some information about Michelangelo's David:

David is a masterpiece of Renaissance sculpture sculpted by Michelangelo from 1501 to 1504. The 17 foot marble statue portrays the Biblical King David in the nude. Unlike previous depictions of David which portray the hero after his victory over Goliath, Michelangelo chose to represent David before the fight contemplating the battle yet to come.[2] It came to symbolize the defense of civil liberties embodied in the Florentine Republic, an independent city state threatened on all sides by more powerful rival states and by the hegemony of the Medici themselves.

Also included are a special welcome dinner in a lively Roman restaurant, and stops in Pisa to admire the Leaning Tower, and in Verona to see Juliet’s balcony. Scenic rides will show you the Tyrrhenian coast, the Lombardian plains, the flat Po area, the wooded Etruscan Apennine mountain range, and Tuscany’s Chianti wine country. In Venice a private boat ride and a glassblowers’ demonstration are included.

Some information on the Sistine Chapel:

The Sistine Chapel is the best-known chapel in the Apostolic Palace, the official residence of the Pope in Vatican City. It is famous for its architecture, evocative of Solomon's Temple of the Old Testament, and its decoration which has been frescoed throughout by the greatest Renaissance artists including Michelangelo, Raphael, Bernini, and Sandro Botticelli. Under the patronage of Pope Julius II, Michelangelo painted 12,000 square feet (1,100 m2) of the chapel ceiling between 1508 and 1512. He resented the commission, and believed his work only served the Pope's need for grandeur. However, today the ceiling, and especially The Last Judgement, are widely believed to be Michelangelo's crowning achievements in painting.

Romantic Rhine / Zurich to Amsterdam

Enjoy sightseeing in Strasbourg, Koblenz, Cologne and Heidelberg and a canal cruise in picturesque Amsterdam. Sail through the dramatic Rhine Gorge, see Lorelei Rock and visit the quaint wine village of Rüdesheim.

The Rhine Gorge is a popular name for the Upper Middle Rhine Valley, a 65 km section of the River Rhine between Koblenz and Bingen in Germany. It was added to the UNESCO list of World Heritage Sites in June 2002 for a unique combination of geological, historical, cultural and industrial reasons.

Even in the 19th century, reefs and rapids made it extremely dangerous for ships to pass this point on the Rhine River. The legend tells us, that a siren called "Lorelei" bewitched the hearts of the sailors and when they looked up to the rock, their boat crashed and they sank.

Rüdesheim is a winemaking town in the Rhine Gorge and thereby part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site. It lies in the Rheingau-Taunus-Kreis in the Regierungsbezirk of Darmstadt in Hesse, Germany. It is officially known as Rüdesheim am Rhein, which distinguishes it from Rüdesheim an der Nahe.

Dromoland Castle is one of the few castle hotels that can trace its ownership back through history to Gaelic Irish families of royal heritage. At Dromoland the vitality of the Castle lifestyle endures. Blending old world elegance with modern day comforts, it is one of Europe's most desired destinations. The castle is near the Cliffs of Moher and just 8 miles from Shannon Airport making it an ideal last night stay!

Dromoland Castle, one of the most famous baronial castles in Ireland, was the ancestral home of the O'Briens, Barons of Inchiquin, who are one of the few native Gaelic families of royal blood and direct descendants of Brian Boroimhe (Boru) High King of Ireland in the eleventh century.

1002-1014
Brian Boru ruled Ireland as High King from his throne in Killaloe.

1014
Donough O'Brien, a son of Brian Boru, controlled Dromoland when it was a defensive stronghold. It was similar in structure to Bunratty Castle, which was also an O'Brien stronghold at that time. For the next 900 years a branch of the 0'Briens lived and ruled from Dromoland Castle.
